Bridgerton has inspired surge in sales of 19th century style items

The Bridgerton effect! Viewers desperate to recreate Regency England at home drive a rise in searches for antique furniture, wisteria and even CORSETS, eBay figures show

  • Sales of headbands and lace tops have increased as well as tea sets and pianos  

Viewers have been going wild for Netflix’s steamy new period drama Bridgerton, and it seems the hit show has been inspiring shoppers to recreate Regency London at home. 

The popular series became a worldwide after debuting on Christmas Day, with fans gripped by the story of the Bridgerton family, and how their lives are turned upside-down by the revelations of the illusive gossip columnist Lady Thistledown.  

Since its launch, there has been a spike in online searches for clothes, furniture and accessories inspired by the time period, according to eBay, including a rise in people searching for corsets, antique chairs and afternoon tea sets like the ones seen on screen.

Priyanka Patel, Senior Trading Manager said: ‘Inspired by the nation’s latest favourite TV show, Bridgerton, we’re seeing shoppers embrace trends of the 19th century. 

She told there’s been an uptake in: ‘Fashion looks such as corsets and puff sleeves and a turn to more traditional hobbies, which include afternoon tea and sewing.’

Meanwhile there has been a 28 per cent increase in searches for ‘antique chairs’ and a 16 per cent jump in ‘plinth’ enquires, as shoppers look for little touches that will bring some of the grandeur of the set into their homes. 

Other accessories have also proved popular with ‘afternoon tea sets’ seeing a 42 per cent increase.

Several of the key fashion trends seen on screen have also had a surge in popularity, included corsets (39 per cent), puff-ball sleeves (26 per cent) and crystal earrings (34 per cent).   

Figures also revealed that 10 days after the show first aired there was a 4,833 per cent surge in Bridgerton – the book series by Julia Quinn.
