The Waltons was originally based off of a book entitled Spencer’s Mountain, which was written by Earl Hamner; the writer also created and developed the drama series.

The fictional Walton Mountain setting of the show was based off of a real community in Virginia named Schuyler, where Hamner spent his childhood.

The series follows the lives of the eponymous family as they attempt to carve out a living through the years of the Great Depression and World War II.

Each episode featured a narration from the older version of the character John-Boy; Hamner provided the voice for the character, who was partially based on him as well.

Long time running: The Waltons aired for nine seasons between 1972 and 1981 on CBS; the cast is seen together in a promotional portrait in 1975

The series, which ran from 1972 until 1981, received positive reviews during its time on the air and was awarded the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series a year after its debut.

Numerous guest stars appeared on the program during its run, including Sissy Spacek, Ron Howard and Merle Haggard.

Three separate reunion movies were produced after the show’s cancellation, which all aired in 1982.

Real life inspiration: The series was based off of the childhood of series creator Earl Hamner, who also provided voiceover for the older version of John-Boy in the show; Ralph Waite, Richard Thomas, and Michael Learned are pictured together in 1974

A trilogy of television features were again filmed over the course of the 1990’s, and many of the original cast members returned to participate in them.

The Waltons also inspired a short-lived animated series entitled These Are The Days, which ran for a single season on ABC before being shelved.

Other show casts that have been brought together by the James Wesley and Seth Rudetsky-hosted program include those of Taxi, 30 Rock and Desperate Housewives, among numerous others.
