Sia admits motherhood is both ‘painful and rewarding’ after adopting teens

Sia admits motherhood is both ‘painful and rewarding’… after adopting two teenagers in 2019 because they were ‘ageing out of the foster care system’

Sia announced in May last year that she’d adopted two teenage boys in 2019, both of whom were 18 at the time and ageing out of the foster care system.

And the notoriously private musician, 45, spoke about her experience during an interview on The Sunday Project, saying motherhood had been both ‘painful and rewarding’ when asked by host Lisa Wilkinson.

Sia, who only revealed the name of one of her sons, Che, in October, said: ‘One’s doing better than the other, and it’s hard.’

Motherhood: On Sunday night, Australian musician Sia, 45, updated fans on her journey to motherhood during an interview on The Project

‘It’s been both painful and rewarding. All I can say really is that I just have to keep reminding them that I’ll be here, I’m never going anywhere and I love them.’

She said she understands why it might be difficult for her boys to understand she loves them unconditionally, given their history in foster care.

‘I think it’s just scary to have someone say “I’ll love you forever”, when you’ve been in 28 different homes your entire life,’ she said.

Sia announced she’d adopted two sons during a SiriusXM interview in late May.

‘I adopted two sons last year. They were 18, they’re both 19 years old now. They were ageing out of the foster care system and yeah, I love them,’ she said.

The singer did not disclose their names nor discuss them further, but did reveal one of her son’s names as Che during an interview with InStyle in October.

She previously told DJ Zane Lowe on his Apple Music podcast in July that her adopted sons, who are black, had made her more aware of racial prejudice in the United States.

‘I’m embarrassed that it took me to adopt two black sons to really understand what they go through on a daily basis,’ Sia said.

She admitted she was ‘very scared’ for her children, and had to show tough love to the teenagers when they weren’t being transparent with her.

‘I’d say, “I’m doing this because I’m your mother. I love you,”‘ she explained.

On the same podcast, Sia also revealed she had become a grandmother at the age of 44, as her youngest had welcomed ‘two babies’ of his own.

She said: ‘My youngest son just had two babies. I’m a f**king grandma! I’m just immediately horrified. No, I’m cool.’
