Eamonn Holmes hits out at TV interviewers who do not ‘listen’ to guests

He has hosted his final Friday morning This Morning slot alongside his wife Ruth Langsford after being axed from the ITV show.

And Eamonn Holmes recently said that working in TV is the ‘easiest thing’ to do, but is ‘made difficult’ by people who do not ‘understand it or want to seem important’.

The broadcaster, 61, quipped that he has been left ‘aghast’ at some co-presenters who do not ‘listen’ to their interviewee and instead ask unrelated questions.

Criticism: Eamonn Holmes said that working in TV is the ‘easiest thing’ to do, but is ‘made difficult’ by people who do not ‘understand it or want to seem important’

Speaking on Talking Success with Nicki Chapman at the start of December, Eamonn explained: ‘Television is the easiest thing you’ll ever do in your life, made difficult by people who either don’t understand it or who want to seem important because if they suddenly say, “No, no, no, no, no” they’re important.’

The longtime host also hit out at interviewers who ‘do not listen’ to their guests, as they instead want to ask their set questions or ‘prove how smart they are’.

He continued: ’99 per cent of interviewers do not listen, they have set questions in their head, they want to prove how smart they are, they want to recite a lot of information they’ve written down.

‘And I just look at the screen and say “ask a blooming question, what is your point?”‘

Eamonn added that it always surprises him how many interviewers do not take the time to speak to their guests off-camera, something he believes is very important.

He said he always makes time to speak to his guests during the commercial breaks as he feels it is important to build up a ‘certain amount of trust’ with them.

Talking to TV presenter Nicki, 53, he continued: ‘It never ceases to amaze me how few interviewers take the time to talk to their guests.

‘There’s this nonsense that goes about, some will say “yes but you don’t want to shatter the illusion or you want to keep the interview fresh”.

‘But you know, believe me, I can feign fresh.’

Later in December, Eamonn and his wife Ruth, 60, hosted their final Friday show on This Morning, with Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary set to replace them.

Eamonn and Ruth, who presented the Friday morning slot for 14 years, will host the ITV show from Monday to Thursday during the schools’ six-week summer holiday.

The duo appeared on screen for their last show, during which Eamonn made a dig about bosses ‘getting rid’ of them during a chat about discounted trees, before the pair both grew emotional while saying goodbye.

It has recently been claimed that the longtime presenters have reportedly been told to keep quiet about their axing.

According to sources, the presenters have been advised to not address losing their slot on the ITV programme to avoid missing out on more work opportunities.

A source told The Sun: ‘Ruth and Eamonn are obviously upset and feel humiliated about being put out to pasture.

‘But they’ve been advised to keep schtum or risk losing more work. It could damage their brand if they lash out.’

MailOnline has previously contacted representatives for Eamonn, Ruth and ITV for comment.
