Mariah Carey forgets Auld Lang Syne’s lyrics while tunefully ringing in 2021

While All I Want For Christmas Is You has stood the test of time as her most enduring festive hit, she also enjoyed success with her 2010 rendition of Auld Lang Syne.

Yet Mariah Carey struggled to recall the lyrics of the rousing traditional track when she opted to wish her Instagram and Twitter followers a Happy New Year in song.

As the clock struck midnight early Friday, the chart-topping superstar, 50, took to her social media accounts to belt out the track, before stumbling on the chorus.

‘I am freaking out! This is amazing. I have not seen this until this moment, OK?’ exclaimed Carey, who was presented the honour by her nine-year-old twins.

Mariah, who shared a video of the plaque’s unveiling with her 9.8million Instagram followers, unwrapped it on camera as her twins watched joyously.

It featured the album’s original cover art, which showed Carey rocking a Santa Claus inspired mini dress made of red velvet and fluffy white trim.

‘Merry Christmas and All I Want For Christmas Is You – multi-platinum worldwide album and single,’ was written in the centre of the plaque in bold, red lettering.

Mariah’s honour also noted the number of times the album and it’s hit single went platinum around the world over the past 26 years.

‘Let’s start here,’ said Carey excitedly in the video as she pointed to the song and album’s stats in the United States.

All I Want For Christmas Is You, currently atop the Billboard Global 200 chart, has gone platinum eight times in the US. Merry Christmas has achieved the same.
