Ricky Martin says album Pausa ‘became my medicine’ as he ‘was really anxious’ over COVID-19 pandemic

Releasing an album during the COVID-19 pandemic is definitely a risky proposition for any artist.

But the process of releasing a new record actually helped Ricky Martin gain some semblance of normalcy amid such an uncertain time.

The 49-year-old singer revealed that releasing his album Pausa back in May actually helped him find a balance.

He told People on Tuesday: ‘This album really became my medicine at a certain moment because, to be honest, I was really anxious.

‘The uncertainty of not knowing what was going to happen, having to cancel a tour. People were telling me, “Ricky, you’re never going to be able to go back on stage.” These are the things that were throwing at us.’

The star had been gearing up for a world tour along fellow Latin pop megastar Enrique Iglesias.

Martin said: ‘I believe that this album, Pausa, became my balance.’

Things certainly worked out for him as he is nominated for a 2021 Grammy Award in the best Latin pop/urban album category.

As the world were in the process of lockdowns at the time of release, Ricky believes that the album came at a great time.

He explained: ‘It’s funny because most of the lyrics were already written. They were exactly what people needed to hear when we started this lockdown.

‘ We haven’t seen the PTSD. We haven’t seen the trauma that this is causing. I just want to give the audience Pausa, which is relaxing and peaceful.’

Martin has become quite the family man since fathering his firstborns in 2008 and tying the knot in 2018.

He and husband Jwan Yosef, 36, announced the birth of their fourth child last year on October 29, after revealing the month before that they were expecting.

Martin said while accepting the National Visibility Award at the 23rd HRC National Dinner: ‘My family’s here. Jwan, I don’t see you, but my husband, Jwan, I love you.

‘My beautiful twins, Valentino and Matteo, they’re also here. I love you with all my heart ― you’re my strength, you inspire me every day, you motivate me to keep doing what I’m doing and you guys are amazing kids. You guys are amazing.’

He gave a shoutout to their daughter Lucia, two, whom they welcomed in December of 2018, before gushing: ‘By the way, I have to announce that we are pregnant. We are waiting. I love big families!’

The American Crime Story actor married Yosef in January of 2018, 10 years after he welcomed twin sons Matteo and Valentino, both 12, as a single father.

He recently spoked with ET Online about parenting teenagers: ‘Pre-adolescence is here and it’s getting funky. And on top of that, we’re dealing with a lockdown and it’s, “Grrr…get out of the way! This is my room, not yours, blah blah.” You know, it’s all part of it.

‘But these two are really cool kids. They’re doing really good in school considering what we’re dealing with and they have a beautiful little sister and a little brother and they own that role of the protective older brothers. So, it’s very beautiful. I’m very, very proud of them and I’m very lucky to have the family that I have.’

Martin clarified that although Matteo and Valentino are the oldest, it’s Lucia that calls the shots: ‘It’s not their house either, it’s the girl’s house. It’s Lucia’s house. She runs the house. She doesn’t snap fingers yet but in the eyes you can tell she’s like “No.” She’s only two, by the way.’

He also revealed that he and Yosef might not be done in the baby department just yet: ‘Some people think I’m crazy but I love a big family and I have a couple of embryos waiting for me. I don’t know. That’s all I got to say… Jwan is going crazy at the moment, but it’s OK, don’t tell him.’
