Demi Lovato opens up about recovery from bulimia … and sports an edgy look with brash blonde ‘do

Demi Lovato opened up about her past battle with bulimia and how she’s making progress in her recovery in an Instagram post Thursday.

‘I’m so grateful that I can honestly say for the first time in my life – my dietitian looked at me and said “This is what eating disorder recovery looks like,”‘ the 28-year-old singer said.

The Anyone artist opened up about her past misconceptions on the sensitive topic, saying she ‘used to genuinely believe recovery from an eating disorder wasn’t real’ and ‘that everyone was faking or secretly relapsing behind closed doors.’

She continued: ‘”Surely she throws up here and there,” “she can’t POSSIBLY accept her cellulite” … those [were] just a few of the things that I used to tell myself growing up.’

Lovato stressed to her nearly 95 million followers that she is living proof that people can come back from personal battles with eating disorders, as she did. 

‘Also let this be a reminder to anyone who doesn’t think it’s possible: IT ACTUALLY IS … YOU CAN DO IT. I BELIEVE IN YOU,’ Lovato said. ‘This year was tough.. be gentle on yourself if you slip up and remember to get right back on track because you’re WORTH THE MIRACLE OF RECOVERY … I LOVE YOU.’

The Still Have Me performer accompanied the post with a series of shots in a one-piece swimsuit that she took this past summer. 

‘In honor of my gratitude for the place I’m in today, this was a lil shoot I did by myself in quarantine this summer when I wanted to celebrate my stretch marks instead of being ashamed of them,’ she said. ‘I started wearing actual glitter paint on my stretch marks to celebrate my body and all of it’s features (whether society views them as good OR bad).’

In a statement reflecting her positive body image, Lovato said her ‘stretch marks aren’t going away so might as well throw a lil glitter on em’ amiright?’

She posted a few images ‘without sparkle edits,’ adding, ‘Instagram vs reality type s*** you kno?’

Lovato also posted a series of selfies on Instagram Stories, as she showed off her new blonde hairdo with a maroon hat, a black leather jacket, and a black top with a graphic on it. 

She rounded out her ensemble with black leggings and boots, accessorizing with multiple rings on her hands.
