Nicolas Cage takes viewers through the fascinating history of cursing in bleep-filled trailer for new Netflix docuseries History Of Swear Words

Everybody uses them – whether they admit it or not.

And Nicolas Cage is pulling the covers off the taboo of using profane language, in the uproarious first trailer for a new documentary series exploring ‘the origins, pop culture-usage, science and cultural impact of curse words.’

As host of the fascinating series, titled History Of Swear Words, the 56-year-old Oscar winner starts things off in the promo clip with a spirited, 8-second-long YELL of the word ‘f**k’ at the top of his lungs.

He then gets right down to business, taking on the air of an academic seated at the fireplace.

‘Swear words. They’re the most popular and alluring taboos we have. But the secrets to their strange power have been shrouded in mystery, until now,’ Cage says.

‘Join me on a journey through the history evolution and cultural impact of swearwords.’

The trailer then goes on to present a number of experts in etymology, as well as musicians, comics and other celebrities who’ve made famous use of some of the dirtier words in the English language.

Historically significant moments are brought up, including the advent of the ‘parental advisory explicit content’ labels that began appearing primarily on rap and hip-hop albums in the late 80s and early 90s, which one commenter rightfully says is ‘implicitly racist.’

The trailer even includes a very simple scientific experiment, in which different people are seen dunking their hands in a bucket of freezing ice water – those who are permitted to express their pain via cursing out loud, and those who are not.

It’s quickly clear that the subjects who are allowed to swear last substantially longer with their hands submerged than those who aren’t.
