A cat has been saved from being crushed in a garbage machine after a worker scooped a sack off a conveyor belt and found the moggie tied inside it.

The operative spotted the sack and opened it seconds before the animal would have been mangled in the garbage separating machine at the Gorkomkhoz company in Ulyanovsk, Russia.

CCTV footage showed the moment the sack was pulled off the conveyor belt as workers sorted through rubbish and opened up plastic bags on December 21.

When one bag failed to open it was taken off the belt, but all work stopped when a cat was found inside.

The conveyor belt was halted as a worker gestured to the cat while looking at the CCTV camera. Another worker radioed for help as the man who saved the cat held it in his arms.

The animal was ‘chubby, clean and well-groomed’ without a scratch. Company director Igor Perfilyev said: ‘The cruelty of people is surprising. A little more and the sack with the cat would have gone into the separator. Fortunately, the animal was not hurt. But he is very scared.’

He was sure that ‘until recently he was someone’s pet’.

He stressed: ‘Unfortunately, the cases of pets thrown into the garbage are becoming more frequent.

‘The big problem is that it is impossible to find those responsible for what they did.’

It is the third time in two months employees of the company have found animals while sorting waste.

Earlier, two red-eared turtles and an African hedgehog were rescued. The incident triggered strong comments on social media.

Elisey Valeryev posted: ‘How is this possible? Thanks to the staff for their care.

‘I’m afraid to imagine what would have happened if they hadn’t had time to unpack the sack…’

Roza Romanova said: ‘Nightmare, people are monsters…. Poor cat, I am crying.’
