Olympic hurdler Jana Pittman, 38, welcomes her fourth child and says she wants to try for a FIFTH… as she speaks about her surprising new career

Jana Pittman has announced the arrival of her fourth child.

The retired Olympic hurdler, who ditched her sporting career to become an obstetrician, went through a quick 90-minute labour before welcoming son Charles into the world.

The sportswoman, 38, who only recently married Sydney businessman Paul Gatward, 52, gushed over the ‘gorgeous’ newborn in an interview with New Idea, and revealed husband ‘already wants more’ children in the future.

‘For me, there’s no difference between having four and five kids, so maybe we will,’ she said. ‘I think my parents and my career want this to be my last pregnancy, but I wouldn’t rule out another.’

First-time father Paul, who prefers to stay out of the media spotlight, married Jana in a private ceremony just a few months before she gave birth.

Two of Jana’s children, daughters, Emily, five, and Jemima, three, were born via IVF and an anonymous sperm donor. She also has a 14-year-old son, Cornelis, from her marriage to her first husband and former coach, Chris Rawlinson.

The gold medal winner transitioned from being an athlete to a doctor earlier this year, joining Sydney’s Blacktown and Mount Druitt hospitals as part of their intern program after commencing her medical training seven years ago.

Jana, who is training to work within women’s health and fertility, gave birth in the very same hospital she works at, with little Charles arriving two weeks early.

‘I was looking forward to the experience of my first water birth, so the hospital room was full of candles and I had my own special music,’ she said.

‘But he came out within 10 minutes of me hopping into the water, so I didn’t need any of it. Worse still, Paul was stuck in traffic and missed his arrival.’

In a statement announcing her medical career in January, Jana said: ‘I loved my athletics career, representing Australia was gold, but I hope my future in medicine will be even better.

‘It’s one of those things where you think you’re never going to get there, but it shows that if you persist with something you love, then it just might happen.’
