Doctor Who New Year special teases sleek, sophisticated Daleks hell-bent on ‘maximum extermination’ as Jodie Whittaker prepares to return as thirteenth Timelord

Doctor Who’s most iconic intergalactic enemy has been given a sleek new makeover ahead of the show’s annual New Year special. 

A short teaser shared with Twitter followers on Monday evening showed the dreaded Daleks’ with polished bodywork and and pulsing neon blue lights.

A handful of ominous tweets also suggested they will once again be bidding for world domination, with one reading ‘Your future is in safe hands,’ while another instructed fans to ‘prepare for maximum extermination.’

The new episode, titled Revolution Of The Daleks, will air on New Year’s Day, with Jodie Whittaker reprising her role as the thirteenth Doctor. 

It will be the latest in a series of appearances for the evil cyborg race, having originally been encountered by first Doctor William Hartnell in 1963. 

Reflecting on the new episode, John Barrowman – who returns as Captain Jack Harkness – told Radio Times: ‘There will be some tears shed, there will be some hearts broken.

‘There will be smiles on people’s faces. So you’re gonna get everything… the gamut… the rollercoaster of emotions in this episode, in the special.’

Other stars expected to return for the one-off special include Bradley Walsh, Mandip Gill and Tosin Cole. 

Jodie divided fans of the show after being unveiled as the show’s first female Doctor in 2018 – some 55-years after it first launched on the BBC.

Addressing the inevitable pressure that comes with the role in June, she said: ‘The thing I would say to the next person is the pressure of the history of the show is all made up in your own head, on set all the crew who have transitioned onto the show they are kind of excited and with you to bring something new because that is the beauty of this as a role.

‘You’re not supposed to be recreating what someone did you’re supposed to take it. There is a pressure and an actor’s monologue for a long time, but when you’re in your doctor’s clothes and you’ve got your own friends in it feels in a weird way all that pressure disappears because it’s yours to play with.’

Jodie also revealed the title of the forthcoming New Year special, though she claimed that was the only thing she could give away.
