Taylor Swift lands her second number one album in 2020 with Evermore which has sold over ONE MILLION copies

Taylor Swift is having a very successful year.

Last week, the 31-year-old star’s most recent album Evermore topped the Billboard 200 chart, and has become one of the highest-selling albums of the year.

According to the singer’s label Republic, the surprise release has sold over 1M copies in less than a week following its December 11 debut.

Huge success: Taylor Swift’s newest album Evermore has become her second number one album this year, and has also sold over one million copies

Swift’s previous album Folklore, which was also released in July without any prior announcements, still has the distinction of being the highest-selling album of 2020.

The only other musical artists to achieve two number one albums this year were K-pop mainstays BTS and rapper YoungBoy Never Broke Again.

The first album, which Evermore has been described as a ‘sister album’ to, also enjoyed the biggest debut of any album released this year.

With Folklore, the singer also broke Whitney Houston’s longstanding record for having an album spend the most weeks at the number one position on the Billboard 200.

Folklore has been nominated for the Album of the Year Award at the upcoming Grammy Awards, and the release’s lead single Cardigan has received a nomination for Song of the Year.

Evermore has become Swift’s eighth album to sell over a million copies during its first week of release; its first single Willow went on to top the Hot 100 chart.

Billboard’s statistics for the album’s numbers come from a combination of physical album sales and virtual song streams.

The media company also classified the You Belong With Me singer’s newest album as an alternative release, as it follows her recent turn towards folk and indie-influenced songwriting.

Like her eighth album, Swift’s latest release was entirely recorded during a period of quarantine during which she also recorded songs for Folklore.

The release continued on her stylistic distancing from her former pop-oriented sound, and featured contributions from various other artists, including HAIM, Bon Iver, and The National; Jack Antonoff also worked as a songwriter and producer.

On December 10th, the singer posted a number of photos to her Instagram account depicting her backside, which would eventually become the album’s cover.

Evermore was released the day afterwards, two days before Swift’s birthday.
