Home Town’s Ben and Erin Napier discuss how they prioritize family over everything: ‘Nothing is worth missing out on memories together’

Thanks to the huge success of their HGTV show Ben and Erin Napier have no shortage of opportunities.

But the couple – who host renovation show Home Town on the network – say they will always put family first above everything else. 

‘We say no to a lot of opportunities,’ Erin, 35, tells PEOPLE.

The couple, have been married for 12 years, have daughter Helen, three, together.

‘For 18 years we get to be an influence in her life. I want those years to be really good and happy and healthy, because we can never get them back,’ she adds.

‘No matter how great an opportunity or amount of money, nothing is worth missing out on memories together with Helen.’

The couple also have a rule when it comes to business opportunities, agreeing to never be away from Helen for more than two nights.

‘If somebody wants us to come and speak at something or there’s an appearance or work-related trip, we say, “If we can do it in two nights or less then we can come. But if it’s going to be three nights, then we have to bring our nanny and Helen and we need you to foot the bill for that,’

The TV personality says that if there isn’t a budget for their daughter to join them on the trip then they will flat-out refuse to do the gig.

‘If it’s like, “Oh, well we don’t have the budget for that.” Well, then, we can’t come.’

The duo also have a rule that they never stay away from home for more than two nights unless their daughter can come with them: 'If it's like, "Oh, well we don't have the budget for that." Well, then, we can't come.'

The couple also talked to PEOPLE about their desire to make sure Helen’s upbringing is as normal as possible, with lots of outdoor activities.

‘We want to keep Helen away from screens until it’s absolutely impossible.’ Erin explains.

‘She plays outside a lot. That’s the goal. That’s how we grew up and we both had a magical childhood.’
