Sunrise’s Edwina Bartholomew reveals her husband being made redundant due to the Covid-19 recession was ‘good timing’ as it gave them quality time with their daughter

Sunrise presenter Edwina Bartholomew and her husband of two years, Neil Varcoe, welcomed their first child together, daughter Molly, in December last year.

And the 37-year-old newsreader has revealed that despite 2020 being a turbulent year for many, she feels lucky to have spent so much quality time with her family.

‘It’s been a strange year for us, because in many ways, it’s been really good timing,’ she told Monday’s issue of TV Week magazine.

‘My husband was made redundant around the same time the lockdown happened,’ she added.

Despite this professional setback, Edwina said she cherished the few months she and Neil were able to spend together as a family while he stayed at home.

On Saturday, Edwina and Neil celebrated Molly’s first birthday with close family and friends.

‘The happiest sausage in Sydney turned one today. Happy Birthday Molly,’ she wrote on Instagram.

‘Thank you for being the best Christmas present we could have ever wished for. I have so loved being your mum, being perpetually covered in pumpkin and even being so bone-tired at times I felt completely bonkers. Still am and still do.’

It comes after Edwina shared a refreshingly candid confession on Friday about the first night she spent away from her daughter.

In a op-ed for The Daily Telegraph, she revealed that she isn’t ‘ashamed to say it was marvellous’.

‘Being a parent can be suffocating sometimes, no time to yourself and the door to the loo always open,’ she wrote.

‘I’ve had one night away from her this year and I’m not ashamed to say it was marvellous.’

However, she did admit that at the end of the evening she did end up ‘scrolling through’ photos of the adorable tot.
