Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who previously collaborated with the brothers on multiple films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, are slated to write the screenplay for the project.

The production is based on the 2018 graphic novel, which was written and illustrated by Simon Stalenhag.

The brothers first acquired the production rights to the property in 2017, and It director Andy Muschietti was slated to helm the film, but had to drop out due to other commitments; he will still serve as a producer, along with his sister Barbara.

The 16-year-old actress is set to portray a teenage girl who is sent a robot by her missing brother and embarks on an adventure underscored by the unraveling of a conspiracy.

Although the story features the involvement of robotic characters, Markus noted that the film will still have a distinctly human bent to it saying that: ‘This is a very human story about a teenage girl with all the powers of a teenage girl and nothing more.’

The Russos issued a statement about Universal’s committal to theatrical release, stating that: ‘This is incredible news for us as filmmakers, and for audiences around the world who want an opportunity to experience films in theaters again.’

The filmmaking team also spoke about the resurgence of film theaters as a result of the continued efforts to combat COVID-19, as they noted, ‘This is also a positive sign that, as vaccines become available, the theatrical market is returning.’

With both the Russos and Brown already having packed schedules, the film is not projected to begin production until late 2021 at the very earliest.

The brothers are set to direct the upcoming adaptation of the 2009 thriller novel The Gray Man, which was written by Mark Grearney.

Ana de Armas, Chris Evans, and Ryan Gosling are all slated to appear in the project, and production on is set to begin next month.

Brown’s future projects include filming the upcoming fourth season of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things, which restarted production in September after the onset of the pandemic forced shooting to shut down.
