George Clooney reveals the one thing wife Amal couldn’t stand about Midnight Sky

He may be one of Hollywood’s most desirable leading men.

But George Clooney has revealed the beard he grew for his role in Midnight Sky was a major turn-off for his wife, human rights lawyer Amal Clooney.

The actor, 59, said on Thursday that Amal and their three-year-old daughter, Ella, were ‘happy to see it go’ once filming wrapped. 

‘My daughter and my wife, maybe the happiest day I can remember, was the day I shaved it off,’ he said on Australia’s Today show. ‘They were really happy to see it go.’

However, he admitted that his son, Alexander, also three, was a fan of the beard and enjoyed ‘sneaking things into it’.

‘My son would grab me by the beard and pull my head over the to talk to me, so he kind of enjoyed it,’ George added.

‘He would sneak things into my beard when I was sleeping. I would have a popsicle stuck to my neck when I went to work.’

Not only did George grow a beard for the role, but he also underwent an impressive physical transformation ahead of filming.

‘I spent the summer in Italy eating lentil soup and working out three times a day – I lost about 25 pounds (11 kilograms) because you wanted him [the character] to be pretty emancipated,’ he said.

In the film, George plays a scientist who ventures through the Arctic with a young girl to contact a crew of returning astronauts in the wake of a global catastrophe. 

‘It isn’t very often you get to read a really good script and see a good story,’ he said of the movie.

‘In my life and my career, it is one or two scripts a year that you read, and this was one I read and I thought, I am kind of the right guy to play this part.’
