Peter Pan author JM Barrie’s home in unspoilt village goes up for sale for £950,000

A delightful Victorian five-bedroom house that was once home to beloved Peter Pan author JM Barrie has gone on the market for £950,000.

The famous novelist is known to have spent summers at Beechwood, in the unspoilt Scottish village of Strathtay in Highland Perthshire, and is understood to have rented the period property.

The home has still retained much of its original features and charm, with fine cornicing, panelled doors, part-leaded windows, decorative fireplaces and a carved wooden staircase.

Beechwood has a slated roof with tiled ridges and finials, overhanging eaves and bay windows, according to estate agents Galbraith.

The 3,767 sq ft period property is spread over three reception rooms, a drawing room, dining room and sitting room with a family-sized kitchen and boot room leading out into the garden.

The gardens and grounds at Beechwood are designed to provide great structure and colour throughout most of the year from the daffodils and narcissi in early spring through to rhododendrons and azaleas in early summer. The bedrooms are on the first floor, with the principal bedroom benefiting from its own spacious en-suite bathroom, while the further three bedrooms and study/single bedroom have two bathrooms.

Outside there is a double garage, potting shed and log store, while the private gardens also have a decked area, woodland and a paddock.

The home also includes a woodland knoll lying to the west with mature native trees including oak, ash, beech, birch, spruce, larch and Scots pine.

Scott Holley, from estate agents Galbraith, said: ‘The lovely thing about Beechwood is it’s very much in the countryside but it’s on the edge of Strathtay village.

‘It’s a very wealthy and historic village so a lot of the properties are from the Victorian era. It’s a very unspoilt village and Beechwood is very much in keeping with architecture.

‘It’s quite a large country house with the woodland and paddock but you can walk into the village centre from it and you’ve got shops, a church and golf course all within walking distance so it’s got the best of both worlds.

‘The paddock is fantastic if you have children as there’s so much space to run free and have lots of adventures.

‘The owner has put up a lovely terrace which is a real sun trap – you can sit there with views over your grounds and across to the hills and countryside beyond.

‘It’s a big house with enough space for a big family or to have friends and relatives to stay, but it’s still a manageable house.

‘Since coming out of the first lockdown there’s been a drive for a change of lifestyle and move to the countryside, the volume of buyers looking for that has been quite phenomenal.

‘This house has that nice balance of being accessible and having that high quality of life with everything on your doorstep that you need.’
