Doc Martin’s Stewart Wright reveals he’s become a Deliveroo rider

Doc Martin’s Stewart Wright reveals he’s become a DELIVEROO RIDER to support his family as the COVID-19 pandemic affected his career

Actor Stewart Wright has revealed he’s become a Deliveroo rider in order to support his family.

In a new interview, the film, TV and stage star, 46, who played Police Constable/Sgt Mark Mylow in Doc Martin back in 2004, admitted he turned to the profession as his career was affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

The thespian said: ‘With two young kids and Celia’s work also affected, it soon dawned on me I had to do something quickly to bring some cash in, and so I signed up to be a Deliveroo rider.’

Father-of-two Stewart was lined up for a theatre production earlier this year, but he lost out on the role as the global crisis caused nationwide lockdowns.

The media personality told Bristol Post: ‘Just before it became clear just how serious the virus was, I was in line for a theatre job up in Sheffield, but about a week later the whole project got pulled.

‘I wanted a way of earning money that wouldn’t be affected by the pandemic and delivering fit the bill.’

Since restrictions have eased, the People Like Us star has been able to resume his regular acting duties as he’s on a zero-hour contact with the online food delivery company.

Stewart is set to portray the role of Mr Baines in Steve McQueen’s drama series Small Axe on BBC One on Sunday.

The TV star made his movie debut in 1997’s Fierce Creatures, before appearing in mockumentary series People Like Us two years later and comedy-drama Love and Marriage in 2013.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Doc Martin will come to an end in 2021 after 17 years on-screen.

ITV confirmed the upcoming 10th series of the comedy-drama will be its last, with filming set to begin in the spring.

Doc Martin first debuted on screens in 2004 with Martin Clunes playing the cantankerous GP.

In a statement, leading actor Martin, 59, and his wife Philippa Braithwaite, who produces the series, explained they’ve decided to end the programme to allow fans a chance to celebrate the show with a final edition.

They said: ‘We have loved making nine series of Doc Martin. When we launched the series in 2004 we could never have imagined how much our loyal viewers would take to the grumpy Doc like they have.

‘The series has avid fans both in the UK and throughout the world and we are thrilled that Doc Martin has topped the ratings every time.

‘However, after sixteen years we now feel that the time has come to say goodbye to Portwenn. We will be making the tenth and final series in 2021 and we are very much looking forward to returning to Cornwall to film it.’
