Emily Donovan, 24, from Margam, Port Talbot, Wales, lost her confidence and called off her wedding after discovering her partner had not been faithful.

But the move inspired Ms Donovan, who was 15-and-a-half stone at the time, to get healthy – and she ditched her diet of takeaways, sandwiches, and crisps.

She said: ‘I think that was what kicked off my weight loss because it affected my self-confidence.

‘Before I didn’t want to go out and get dressed up because I didn’t want to have my picture taken. It’s almost as if I missed a chapter of my life.’

Ms Donovan, who works at the Tata Steel works in Port Talbot, took up regular running, going to the gym and healthy eating to lose more than six stone.

She said: ‘At my heaviest in September last year I was 15 stone and nine pounds and now I weigh nine stone.

‘I went on holiday before I joined Slimming World to try and get over my heartbreak and that was when I decided to join.

‘I vowed to be more active but I wasn’t fit enough when I first started. Alongside Slimming World I signed up for Couch to 5k and my dad started running with me.

‘It has been the best thing to happen to me and I’ve got my confidence back now.’

The Tata Steel worker said she had been an overweight child but had previously lost weight with Slimming World before she began to ‘comfort eat’ during a five year relationship with her ex.

She sad: ‘I got comfortable and I was eating what he was eating and not really thinking about what I was eating – I was just comfortable and happy.

‘I never used to cook before. I would buy in or go out for food with my friends and boyfriend.

‘It would always be meals to go, sandwiches and crisps. Sometimes I would miss meals and have loads of snacks instead.’

Ms Donovan says she now enjoys home-cooked meals and spends far more time exercising.

She said: ‘Since joining Slimming World I cook all of my own meals now like spaghetti bolognese, chicken pie and shepherd’s pie but my favourites are the curries because I’m really into Indian food and that’s what I used to binge on.

‘My life has changed definitely with the running and being more active.

‘Before I wouldn’t even go for a walk but now I go out walking on the weekends – the dog is loving it.

‘I never would have thought I could do a Parkrun. I have reached a 10k but hopefully I can do that in a race soon.

‘Since I’ve lost the weight everybody can’t get over it. They all say they see a difference in me and that my confidence has come a long way.

‘I lost the last three stone during lockdown as I seemed to get more motivated. I just saw it as a chance to make a real go of it when it came to exercising, eating and being active.’
