Claudia Karvan reveals the classic rom-com The Heartbreak Kid was ‘the unhappiest job’ of her career and says she would be ‘taken down today’ for accepting the politically incorrect part

Actress Claudia Karvan has revealed that she is ’embarrassed’ by her role in a classic romantic comedy. 

The Heartbreak Kid, released in 1993, is a beloved Australian film, but the 48-year-old says that her role would be considered politically incorrect these days. 

Speaking to Stellar Magazine, the Spirited actress called the role, ‘the unhappiest job of my career’ and said she was uncomfortable portraying an ethnic character.

‘I only ‘fessed up recently that I felt so embarrassed I played a Greek girl. Can you imagine how I would be taken down today?’ she told the magazine. 

Claudia added that she was also uncomfortable playing the older lover of a then-underage Alex Dimitriades, now 46. 

Her character, Christina Papadopoulos, was a 22-year-old teacher who falls for her student, 17-year-old Nick Polides.

In real life, Claudia was 19, while her co-star Alex was 17, when they starred together in the film.

‘This explains the random crying and violent mood swings,’ Oly’s mother Angie, played by Claudia Karvan, tells says after her daughter welcomes her baby. 

The Australian series reunites the team behind the Logie award-winning drama Love My Way as well as Secret Life of Us producer John Edwards. 

In addition to starring Claudia, Angus Sampson is also in the cast as Oly’s father, Dom.
