A Lamborghini diver has had his supercar seized after he was caught driving without insurance.

West Midlands Police impounded the white Lamborghini Aventador – valued at more than £270,000 – because it did not have any cover.

The driver, who has not been named, was driving the Italian-made motor in Stechford, Birmingham, when he was pulled over by police on Thursday.

A computer check revealed the person owned the car but had failed to have it insured.

West Midlands Police wrote on Twitter: ‘Note to anyone who wants to buy a Lamborghini Aventador.

‘Please remember to make sure it is insured for you to drive. Seized today by Stechford Response for no insurance…’

Social media users called for police to have the car crushed to set an example to other uninsured drivers.

One user tweeted: ‘Can you get a mobile crusher and do it outside the house of the person who drove it? And invite me to film/photograph and point and laugh?’

Aphex Dex added: ‘Crush it and make him watch.’ Under the Road Traffic Act 1988, all drivers must have at least third party insurance while behind the wheel.

Apart from a few exceptions, cover for driving another person’s car is no longer included in the majority of insurance policies.

If someone is caught driving without appropriate cover, they can be hit with a £300 fine and six penalty points on their licence.

And if the case is taken to court, motorists could face an unlimited fine and even be disqualified from driving.

Recent figures from RAC Insurance show that almost 80,000 uninsured motorists were caught last year.
