Alien series is in development at FX with Legion creator Noah Hawley… and original Alien director Ridley Scott in talks to executive produce
It isn’t the long-desired fifth film starring Sigourney Weaver that fans have been hoping for, but it’s certainly the next best thing.
On Thursday, the official Disney Twitter account tweeted that an Alien television project is currently in development at FX networks.
‘The first TV series based on the classic film series is helmed by Fargo and Legion’s @Noahhawley,’ the announcement read.

What’s more, FX is reportedly in advance talks with Ridley Scott to join the series as executive producer.
Scott, of course, is the director of the classic first film, from 1979.
The news of Hawley‘s involvement is welcome, as his FX show Legion starring Dan Stevens is mind-bending and visually stunning.

Last year, the Mouse House famously bought 20th Century Fox, which is where the beloved Alien franchise resides.
It is interesting to note that this new series will take place on Earth, as no other story thus far in the entire Alien film franchise has done so.

The closest anyone came was Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s bizarre fourth entry from 1997, Alien: Resurrection, which ended with Weaver and costar Winona Ryder aboard a spaceship that was arriving in Earth’s upper atmosphere.
The Alien Vs. Predator films also took place on our home planet, but those films are considered offshoots and not part of the official Alien cannon.
Fans of the franchise have been long hoping for a return to Alien’s beloved core concepts and stories, beautifully represented in Scott’s original film as well as James Cameron‘s superior 1986 sequel.

In the interim, however, Ridley put out two misbegotten entries in the franchise, that were tenuously connected to the Alien universe at best: 2012s Prometheus and 2017‘s Alien: Covenant.
Additionally, any hope of seeing Sigourney return to the iconic role of heroine Ellen Ripley has been dashed of late, seeing as how she has been beleaguered by Cameron‘s endless Avatar sequels – she is currently wrapping up Avatars 2 and 3 and filming 4 and 5, according to her IMDb page.
Perhaps as this newly announced series develops, Scott may elect to direct an episode or two, and Weaver could potentially grace viewers with her inimitable presence.
