Martin Kemp says Spandau Ballet shouldn’t have arrived in a limo for Band Aid

‘We got the mood of it wrong’: Martin Kemp says he and his fellow Spandau Ballet members shouldn’t have arrived in a limo to record Band Aid’s charity single in 1985

Martin Kemp has claimed Spandau Ballet ‘got the mood wrong’ when they took part in the recording of Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas? in 1985.

The singer, 59, made the candid remark during an appearance on Wednesday’s edition of Lorraine, as he reflected on the single they made for charity alongside a slew of other famous singers.

Saying how the band shouldn’t have arrived in a limo at the time, he said: ‘It was, it was a moment that changed music forever and changed the way music affects charity, but Spandau completely got the mood of it wrong.

‘We were out on tour at the time and we were living in our own bubble. When we got the call to go and do it we turned up in a massive limousine, and so we got the mood of it completely wrong but that was us!’

Martin went on to explain that in comparison Bananarama arrived in a Mini Cooper, while other singers just walked to the studio.

Band Aid is a supergroup that was original founded by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise money for those struggling with famine in Ethiopia with the single Do They Know It’s Christmas?, which has since been re-recorded three more times.

Lorraine took the opportunity to ask Martin if the band would have a reunion, but he quickly scuppered the idea by saying: ‘I don’t think a fish supper is going to get us lot together!

‘The album is not just a celebration of 40 years but a celebration of everybody’s lives,’ he said of their recent special hits release.

Martin also spoke sweetly about his son Roman and daughter Harley, saying they’re ‘both wonderful’ and gushed: ‘I’m really proud of who they are not just of what they’ve achieved but for them as people.

‘That means more to me then who they are and I’m proud of them and just who they’ve grown into.’
