Social media users mock Apple’s ‘stupidly expensive’ $549 AirPod Max headphones

Apple unveiled the new AirPods Max on Tuesday, and while some fans have been eagerly awaiting the wireless over-ear headphones, it seems that most people are stuck on the staggering $549 price tag.

The new headphones have plenty of features, including noise-cancelling technology, spatial audio, and ‘adaptive EQ,’ an d also come in five colors.

But quite a few Twitter users are mocking Apple for the wildly high price, calling it ‘inflated’ and pointing out that headphones alone cost more than a brand new PlayStation 5.

‘Stupidly expensively priced for a stupid customer base,’ one Twitter user complained.

‘Them new Apple headphones look like old computer headphones from school, sound was terrible tryna play Oregon Trail,’ wrote another.

‘The only high end thing about the Apple headphones is the price,’ tweeted a third.

Some complained that there appeared to be no Apple branding immediately obvious on the product, noting that they looked like cheaper options from other brands.

One joked that the pricey headphones had the power to ‘mute poor people.’

Some were furious that the headphones cost the same as a PS5 Digital Edition.

Some have joked that with such a high price, the AirPods Max better have some particularly amazing features.

‘If apple is charging $549 for their headphones I better be able to hear god,’ said one.

‘The airpods max are $550? I better be able to hear him typing when he tryna dm another b****,’ quipped one more.

Meanwhile, others are mocking the headphones’ carrying case, arguing that it looks like a bra or a butt-shaped purse.

‘”AirPods Max Smart Case” or, as we called it in my day, “The Over the Shoulder Boulder Holder,”; wrote CNBC reporter Meg Graham.

‘Who thought the AirPods Max case was a good design, they look like a bra,’ wrote another Twitter user.

Several have posted side-by-side comparisons of the case with different types of bras.

‘This is not how women are included in the world of tech,’ one said.

‘Who designed this AirPods Max case? I can’t be the only one who thinks it looks like robot boobs,’ tweeted another.

Despite the backlash, the controversial headphones have already sold out through the end of the year.

Though the initial sales started shipping yesterday, within 12 hours, they were back-ordered in the US for more than 12 weeks.

Apple says the pricey headphones have active noise cancellation to block out unwanted sounds from outside, as well as spatial audio and ‘adaptive EQ’ — which automatically tunes the low- and mid-frequencies of the music to the shape of an individual’s ear  — for better quality.

They are available in five colors: space grey, silver, sky blue, green, and pink.

Apple claims the new headphones deliver the ‘ultimate personal listening experience’ by combing custom acoustic design, with hardware and software.

AirPods Max require a device running iOS 14.3 or later, macOS Big Sur 11.1 or later, or watchOS 7.2 or later to operate and set up.

They include the H1 chip, which is featured in the newer generation versions of the AirPods and allows for a number of sensors and features within the device.

This includes automatic switching so users can ‘seamlessly move sound’ between the iPhone, iPad, and Mac — as is already possible with the AirPods.

AirPods Max automatically detect when they are on a user’s head using the optical and position sensors and, like the original AirPods, can automatically pause the sound when you lift them away from your ears.

‘AirPods are the most popular headphones in the world, beloved for their effortless setup, incredible sound quality, and iconic design,’ said Greg Joswiak, Apple Senior VP of Worldwide Marketing.

‘With AirPods Max, we are bringing that magical AirPods experience to a stunning over-ear design with high-fidelity audio,’ he added.

‘AirPods Max feature a 40-mm Apple-designed dynamic driver that provides rich, deep bass, accurate mid-ranges, and crisp, clean high-frequency extension so every note can be heard,’ Apple said in a press release.
