Created by founder Kanya King, the MOBO Awards were first held in 1996 and have been broadcast on a variety of channels over the years including BBC One, ITV2 and Channel 5.

In 2018, the MOBO Organisation announced the ceremony would take a one-year hiatus, before producers revealed they were planning to hold a ‘bigger, revamped show’ this year amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The show returned to BBC One this year and aired at 10:45pm, after the ceremony was live streamed on YouTube earlier in the evening.

On the significance of representing black culture in the music industry, TV and radio star Maya Jama said on Tuesday’s edition of The One Show: ‘It’s so important.

‘For a long time they were the only award show in the UK that was celebrating and championing black culture.

‘MOBOs have been doing that for the longest. I think it’s more important than ever for them to be back.

‘We’ve had such a horrible year and so many sad things going on, it’s nice to have something that celebrates the positives.’
