Its run at the Royal Albert Hall may have been cancelled this Christmas, but Annabel’s has brought The Nutcracker to life in its annual festive makeover.

The London members’ club – which is frequented by celebrities, aristocrats and royalty – unveiled its stunning display inspired by the 1892 two-act ballet this week.

Its elegant Berkeley Square façade has been adorned with illuminated theatre drapes, while three enormous Nutcracker figurines stand tall between its Georgian mansion windows.

An arch constructed from hundreds of red and gold baubles surrounds the front door of the club, with matching garlands strung from the balconies of the windows.

And passersby can stand and enjoy a performance of the ballet thanks to a lifesize projection of two dancers which twirl in the first floor windows.

The Sugar Plum and Prince characters are members of the Sophie Adams Ballet Company, and its ‘Snowflakes and Sugar plums’ will be performing at the club throughout the whole of December as past of a Christmas Residency.

The doormen stationed outside have also been given green festive coats for the season.

Birmingham Royal Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker at the Royal Albert Hall this month was cancelled due to the pandemic.

The sparkling display has already proved a hit with locals, with one commenting on Instagram: ‘It just keeps getting better! Nutcracker at Annabel’s! Amazing. Includes a projection of the actual ballet. Simply spectacular.’

Another shared a photograph of the elaborate display, writing: ‘@annabelsmayfair never ceases to amaze me! Just… WOW!!!’

‘Annabel’s looking fabulous for Christmas,’ gushed another.

Last year Annabel’s installed an impressive 42ft faux Christmas tree covered in ‘snow’ and enormous gold baubles, topped with an extravagant copper gold star.

Planning documents submitted to Westminster City Council revealed the ‘tree’ was in fact a printed triangular screen attached to scaffolding measuring 44ft x 43ft.

The year before it opted for a towering green faux fir dressed with red baubles and lights – with a few massive presents added at the bottom.

Annabel’s opened its doors at its new address of 46 Berkeley Square in 2018. The club occupies 26,000 sq ft and offers members space to work, dine and entertain.
