Cobra Kai star Ralph Macchio looks back on his Karate Kid character’s fashion choices with amusement

It’s the role that made him a household name.

But Ralph Macchio doesn’t look back fondly on all aspects of The Karate Kid, with the 59-year-old actor admitting he questions his character’s fashion choices in retrospect.

‘When I look at Daniel LaRusso in 1984, in those camouflage pants and the plaid shirt, it’s just like, were we trying to do this?’ the actor told Men’s Health in their December issue. 

The New York native cites George Clooney as his current style inspiration. 

‘I’m almost the same age as George Clooney, and I think that’s a pretty good trajectory. The class, that whole guy-next-door thing—who wouldn’t want to be George Clooney?’ 

However given the amount of time everyone is spending at home amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Macchio admitted he has had to shelve his go-to suits.

‘Athleisure is my day-to-day, especially right now. I think I’ve bought one button-down in the last six months. I live in sneakers and running shoes—I like to feel like I’m walking on a pillow. I’m too old to be uncomfortable all day long!’ said the veteran actor. 

Meanwhile, Netflix have promised a new trailer for the Karate Kid spinoff series Cobra Kai’s third season will drop on Wednesday, ahead of its January 8 premiere.

And Netlix greenlit a fourth season of the martial arts drama back in October. 

The show originally began on YouTube and became a breakout hit after hitting 55M views on episode one. Its second season premiered to similar numbers, which caused the platform to greenlight a third season in April 2019.  

After receiving the news that Youtube would not go past a third season, Sony TV got permission to shop around for a new home that could order additional episodes of the show, which is how they secured their partnership with Netflix.

Cobra Kai takes place 30 years after the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament where a grown-up Karate Kid, Macchio, struggles in life without the guidance of Mr Miyagi.

To make matters worse he must face his former nemesis Johnny, played by Zabka, who seeks vengeance by re-opening the Cobra Kai dojo.

With the spinoff comes a wave of fresh talented faces, including actor Tanner Buchanan, 21, who has just been cast to star opposite Addison Rae in the remake of She’s All That.
