A Tesco spokesperson said today: ‘We are currently trialling a new self-service checkout option in our Braintree store in Essex, with more space around the checkout for customers to fit trolleys and their bags when they are doing a bigger shop.’

Self-service checkouts were introduced at UK Tesco stores in 2003 and are mainly used by customers with a basket of shopping as there is currently limited space around them in most stores.
