Jodie Comer vows not to respond to her boyfriend’s Trump support scandal

Jodie Comer has discussed ‘cancel culture’, in the wake of the scandal around her boyfriend James Burke’s politics and apparent Trump allegiance.

Appearing on the cover on January’s InStyle’s issue, the Killing Eve star, 27, determinedly slammed ‘the absurdity’ of the accusations and insisted she refused to respond to claims that he supports POTUS for the sake of ‘her health’.

She said: ‘It was really shocking. It was the first time I had ever been dragged into something like that. And it wasn’t just me; it was my family…

‘I had seen the absurdity of what I was being accused of, and what my partner was being accused of… I decided for my own health that I was not going to try and convince these people otherwise. I just wasn’t going to do it.’

Oh dear… Jodie Comer has discussed ‘cancel culture’, in the wake of the scandal around her boyfriend James Burke’s politics and apparent Trump allegiance

In July, when Jodie’s relationship was made public, fans discovered James’ alleged political affiliations. Official records in the US showed that James is a registered Republican voter, although many members of the party strongly oppose Mr Trump.

Some fans criticised Jodie for dating James after jumping to the conclusion without any evidence that he must be a Trump supporter, calling for her to be ‘cancelled’.

In her chat, she went on: ‘The biggest lesson for me this year was: I know who I am.’

Last month, the Jodie broke her silence on James, , a lacrosse player from Massachusetts, as she insisted ‘false information came out about’.

Some of the Killing Eve star’s fans were upset over the summer when screenshots from James’ alleged Instagram account appeared to show he followed Trump, something which Jodie did not confirm or deny in the interview.

She explained: ‘All this false information came out about him, and people just ridiculed him and me, and my family. People took these tweets as truth. That was the biggest time my life has been kind of blown up and publicised in that way…

‘A lot of people read things and they go, ‘Wow, she’s that, she’s this type of person’.  And I’m like, ‘OK, I can spend my life and my energy trying to convince people otherwise, or I can go, I know who I am, I know my truth and that’s good enough’.’

After soaring to fame on Killing Eve and winning hearts with her stunning style she was asked about her own look and said: ‘I’m like a granddad. I like a cashmere jumper, and I like my mom jeans…

‘I wear my New Balance trainers with thick socks. That’s how I like to roll.’

Jodie looked phenomenal in the InStyle shoot, where she donned a series of bright and bold ensembles to add to the stunning spread.

She also discussed how her Killing Eve character Villanelle would handle quarantine: ‘Well, I imagine she would be in her apartment, in a complete mess…

‘Deliveries everywhere, trying to fill some sort of void. Or she would have gotten out to an exotic place. But probably, just like everybody else, she’d be in the house, on the sofa, in pajamas, crumbs all over her, with reality TV on.’

Jodie also detailed meeting Killing Eve writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge was a happy accident: ‘I just declared my love for her. That’s how we met initially. She had a much bigger, swisher hotel room, so everybody eventually moved there because there was more room for dancing’.

Then when she auditioned for Villanelle, which was created and initially written by Waller-Bridge, she explained: ‘And I was like, ‘Oh god!’ I thought back to everyone being drunk, and I was like, ‘Was that a help? Was that a hindrance?’…

‘Actually, I think it can be helpful sometimes, because you are not walking into a room where everyone’s arms are folded, waiting for you to give the performance of a lifetime. It took away the stress a little bit.’
