Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon land a new co-star for The Morning Show: ER veteran Julianna Margulies

Julianna Margulies is getting ready to wake up a little earlier.

The 54-year-old ER actress has been confirmed to join the cast of the Apple TV+ series The Morning Show, as reported by Variety. She will be working with vets Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon.

Margulies is set to portray Laura Peterson, a news anchor at the UBA News network.

Margulies previously received widespread critical acclaim for her role as Carol Hathaway in the longstanding medical drama series ER, whom she portrayed for six seasons; she won a Primetime Emmy Award for her work on the show.

She later starred in the legal/political drama series The Good Wife for the entire length of its seven-season run, and won two more Primetime Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe Award for her role as Alicia Florrick.

The actress recently starred in the AMC black comedy series Dietland, which ran for one season before its cancellation.

In addition to her extensive work in television, Margulies has taken on various film roles over the course of her career, notably appearing in the 2006 action thriller Snakes on a Plane.

Also joining the cast of The Morning Show for its second season will be Russian Doll actress Greta Lee, Ruairi O’Connor, and Hasan Minhaj. 

The show is based off of the book Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV, written by CNN media correspondent Brian Stelter. 

The series stars Witherspoon alongside Aniston, both of whom serve as executive producers on the show.

Additional cast members include Steve Carell, Billy Crudup, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Mark Duplass, among others. 

For their work on the show, Aniston and costar Billy Crudup won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series and a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, respectively. 

The show was approved for a second season during its initial series order in 2017, with the same length of ten episodes agreed upon.

Principal photography for the next set of episodes commenced in February, but was shut down the following month as a response to the global pandemic; filming resumed in October.

The second season was originally slated to premiere in November, and after the pushback, it is anticipated that the new episodes will arrive in 2021 or 2022.
