Isabella Gomez gains lead role in Head Of The Class gender swap reboot as high school teacher first played by Howard Hesseman in 1980s sitcom

Isabella Gomez has been cast in the leading role in the upcoming gender swap reboot of Head Of The Class.

The 22-year-old actress will portray first-time teacher Alicia Adams following Howard Hesseman, 80, who played history teacher Charlie Moore in the 1980s ABC sitcom, according to an article Wednesday by Deadline.

HBO Max ordered a pilot and five more scripts in May from writers Amy Pocha and Seth Cohen, Doozer Productions and Warner Bros. Television, which produced the original series.

The reboot will focus on Alicia and her group of overachieving high school students who she wants to focus less on grades and more on experiencing life.

The original Head Of The Class created by Rich Eustis and Michael Elias followed a group of gifted students at fictional Millard Fillmore High School in Manhattan and their unorthodox teacher played by Howard from 1986 to 1990.

Isabella has been portraying Elena Alvarez on the critically acclaimed comedy series One Day At A Time, a reboot of the CBS sitcom that aired from 1975 to 1984.

One Day At A Time streamed for three seasons on Netflix before it was cancled and moved to Pop for season four.

The ViacomCBS cable network announced Tuesday that the comedy was canceled.

Sony Pictures TV is trying to find a new home for the comedy that also stars Justina Machado, 48, as Penelope Alvarez.

Isabella’s credits also include Matador, Big Hero 6: The Series; Netflix’s A Cinderella Story: Christmas Wish and Modern Family.

The actress was born in Medellín, Colombia and began acting in commercials at the age of five.

Her family immigrated to Orlando, Florida, when she was age 10 and they moved to Los Angeles in 2015 to improve her ability to pursue acting. 

 She dated actor Rhenzy Feliz, 23, in 2018.
