Ms. Marvel FIRST LOOK: Iman Vellani is seen in costume as Kamala Khan on set of upcoming Disney+ series

Iman Vellani has been spotted for the first time in character on the Atlanta, Georgia set of the upcoming series Ms. Marvel.

The upcoming series is based on the Marvel Comics character, and is set to debut on the Disney+ streaming service sometime in late 2021 as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Four.

Vellani is set to portray Kamala Khan, a Pakistani-American teenager from New Jersey who comes to possess shapeshifting powers.

The 18-year-old actress was seen in costume wearing an olive green military jacket with a purple flannel and light blue t-shirt underneath which she paired with a set of dark gray jeans and white sneakers.

Vellani kept a red helmet on as she rode a dusty blue bike; the helmet was initialed with two k’s as a reference to her character’s name.

In another photo, Vellani and an unidentified actress were seen positioned on different levels of a house and were seen wearing capes meant to cover their costumes.

In a picture taken later that day, Vellani was spotted in full costume being pulled up by wires for a stunt while another actor seemed startled by the event.

The character was created by Gerry Conway and John Buscema in 1968 after appropriating the name from another character named Captain Marvel, created by Stan Lee and Gene Colan, who eventually adopted the moniker Mar-Vell.

The first iteration of the character was named Carol Danvers, who took on the Ms. Marvel name; other versions of the character include Sharon Ventura and Karla Sofen.

The Kamala Khan version of the character was created in 2013 by Sana Amanat, Stephen Wacker, G. Willow Wilson, Adrian Alphona and Jamie McKelvie.

Marvel Comics received much attention for the fact that the Khan version of the character was to be the first Muslim American superhero in a major comic book publication; the later critical reception for the new character was widely positive.

Captain Marvel was previously portrayed by Brie Larson in the 2019 film Captain Marvel, where she played Carol Danvers; Larson was also featured in Avengers: Endgame.

Development on a Khan-based series was first mentioned by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige in 2018, with production officially beginning the following year.

Feige also announced at the 2019 D23 conference that there are plans for Ms. Marvel to cross over into films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which Larson reportedly welcomed.

The upcoming series is set to be helmed by showrunner Bisha K. Ali, and announced directors include Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Meera Menon, among others.

Other Marvel-based shows slated to debut on Disney+ include The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision, based on the character Scarlet Witch.
