I’m A Celebrity 2020: Sir Mo Farah ‘will get special halal meals’ in Gwrych Castle

The launch show of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! saw the ten celebrities tucking into a meal of rabbit after winning seven meals for camp.

But it has been revealed that Sir Mo Farah will reportedly be given special halal meals during his stint at Gwrych Castle in Abergele, North Wales.

The Olympian champion, 37, will not eat the same food that is given to the other campmates to keep in line with his Muslim faith, The Sun reported.

Dinner: It has been revealed that Sir Mo Farah will reportedly be given special halal meals during his I’m A Celebrity stint at Gwrych Castle in North Wales

A source told The Sun: ‘Mo told producers a long time ago about his food preferences, so they were prepared.

‘He can’t eat certain food unless it’s prepared in the correct way according to his religion.’

But he will still be taking part in the series’ famous Bushtucker eating trials, as they do not interfere with his religious beliefs.

The Quran and other Muslim teachings do not outlaw the eating of creepie crawlies – only explicitly banning eating scorpions, among other dietary requirements.

The term halal is used to refer to the dietary standard in the Muslim faith, as prescribed in the Quran, with haram being its opposite, meaning unlawful or prohibited.

MailOnline has contacted representatives for I’m A Celebrity and Mo Farah for comment.

It is not the first time that the hit ITV show has prepared halal food for a contestant, as boxer Amir Khan was given special halal rations in 2017.

Amir only joined I’m A Celebrity after discovering the Bushtucker challenges were not against his Muslim faith, as he was concerned that eating insects would be viewed as haram under Islamic law.

A Muslim scholar previously said online: ‘There is no evidence in the Quran or Hadith at all where most insects (except scorpions) are called unclean.

‘Therefore, insects are halal and you can eat them if you want without committing a sin.

‘There are also very good reasons for eating insects, especially in the light of a growing population.’

Speaking to MailOnline ahead of this year’s series, Mo said that while he had some doubts about the show, he wanted to take on the challenge as it’s ‘something different’ from his sport success.

The runner told MailOnline that he’s ‘scared of everything’ going into the show, so is worried he could be viewers’ top choice for the Trials.

He added: ‘I think I’m nervous about being on camera 24/7, whatever you’re doing, taking a shower that’s the nerve-racking part!’

‘You’re always expecting it’s gonna be incredible and then you just go in and it’s less than your expectations.

‘I just want to get myself in there and then I’ll see someone I recognise. That’s the exciting part.’

Mo is among ten celebrities starring in the first ever UK series of I’m A Celebrity this year, after coronavirus saw the show relocate to Wales from Australia.

He is joined in the derelict castle this year by  presenter Vernon Kay, 46, Corrie icon Beverley Callard, and soap star Jessica Plummer, 28.

Also competing for the title of King or Queen of the Castle will be AJ Pritchard, 26; Shane Richie, 56; Victoria Derbyshire, 52; Hollie Arnold, 26, and Jordan North, 30.

Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly are hosting the series once again, while Vick Hope is fronting The Daily Drop, a brand-new series following all camp activity, available on ITV Hub every morning after the main show.

The Geordie duo, the contestants and crew will be tested for COVID-19 every three days throughout the series, with the campmates able to mix freely while they live in the camp as they form their own bubble.

The 2020 series, which kicked off with a bang on ITV on Sunday evening, is expected to last just 20 days – two shorter than normal.
