Jennifer Lopez rom-com Marry Me pushed to May 2021 as Universal shuffles releases amid ongoing pandemic

She talked up her upcoming romantic comedy Marry Me when she covered Billboard magazine last month.

But it turns out that fans of Jennifer Lopez are going to have to wait a little bit longer than anticipated to see the movie.

Universal has decided to push back the release from February to May as it reshuffles its roster again amid the ongoing pandemic, Variety reported Tuesday.

Marry Me is now set to premiere on May 14, taking the date left vacant by the studio’s decision to postpone the animated feature Spirit Untamed to June 4.

In the movie, Lopez, 51, plays a pop superstar who learns her equally famous partner is cheating on her.

During a concert, she sees a male fan holding up a sign saying ‘Marry Me’ and on the spur of the moment, she accepts his proposal.

JLo’s boyfriend in the film is played by Latin recording artist Maluma and the hapless math teacher who finds himself suddenly in the spotlight is played by Owen Wilson.

In her Billboard interview published on October 15, Lopez gushed about the rom-com which she also co-produced and provided the soundtrack for in collaboration with Maluma.

‘It was a little cathartic for me,’ she shared with Billboard. ‘I was playing [a character] trying to find someone who understood her and accepted her for all of what her life was but also just saw her as a person… Like a real girl, which is what I am.’

The singer and actress explained: ‘People see you as this thing, this star. They forget that you’re just a girl and want to live and laugh and be normal.’

The multi-hyphenate also stressed how happy she is that the rom-con has two Latin stars in the lead roles.

‘It’s not common. I’ve been doing movies for 25 years now, and I’ve done 40-something movies. There have been three to four movies in my entire career where I’ve had Latino costars,’ Lopez said.

She added that her production company wanted an international star next to her so they could make an album that was bilingual.

‘That was a big deal for us. That has always been the goal of my career, to show diversity in the different characters that I can play,’ she shared.

Marry Me marks the acting debut of Colombian star Maluma, 26, whose breakthrough album was released in 2015.

‘Music is my biggest passion, but I’m thinking that I want to keep acting,’ Maluma told Billboard. ‘I need to take advantage of this opportunity and start thinking about my next movie.’
