Suranne Jones sports period dress while filming scenes for Gentleman Jack

She has returned to work filming the much-anticipated second series of Gentleman Jack alongside her co-star Sophie Rundle.

And Suranne Jones transformed into her character Anne Lister while shooting scenes at Sewerby Hall in Yorkshire on Monday alongside co-star Sophie Rundle, 32.

The leading actress, 42, donned a long black jacket and waistcoat worn over a white ruffled shirt, keeping with the 1832 time period in which the adaptation of Anne’s journals are set.

Her brunette hair was styled into three impressive buns as she got into character while shooting new scenes for the lesbian drama.

Suranne clutched a thermos presumably containing a hot beverage to keep herself warm as they filmed outdoor scenes in the chilly autumnal weather.

The Doctor Foster actress was joined by co-star Sophie, who became heiress Ann Walker in an extravagant satin dress with puffy sleeves, a tulle neckline and a billowing floor-length skirt.

Her stunning teal ensemble was completed by a period-style wide-brimmed hat decorated with an elaborate flower arrangement.

The Peaky Blinders star, 32, wore her blonde locks in elaborate ringlets that were fastened with a chic pin, while she clutched a scarf around her waist.

Other members of the cast and crew joined the two leading actresses and made sure to keep themselves protected amid the Covid-19 crisis by sporting face masks.

The pair, whose characters married in secret at the end of season one, were seen chatting away while filming on the grounds of Sewerby Hall.

Ben Hunter, who is returning as Anne Lister’s servant Joseph Booth, donned a glamorous gold suit with an embellished navy jacket as he filmed with his co-stars.

The first series followed Anne as she embarked on a relationship with her fellow heiress Ann, after enjoying several relationships with other women.

After falling in love, the pair were torn apart when Ann was taken to Scotland, under threat of being married off by her brother-in-law.

But the finale saw the pair brought back together when Ann was called back to Yorkshire to visit her bedridden aunt.

Their reunion took place in a dramatic hilltop moment in which Ann revealed she was finally ready to marry Anne.

Anne confessed her continued love for Ann, saying: ‘Do you know I don’t think one hour passed when I didn’t think of you. I tried not to.’

‘If you asked me to marry you again I wouldn’t say No,’ Ann promised. ‘But would you say yes?’ Anne checked quickly.

‘Yes. I love you,’ the younger girl sighed, touching the heroine’s face. ‘I’m in love with you. I always have been.’

‘Don’t hurt me,’ muttered Lister back, unexpectedly, poignantly. ‘I’m not as strong as you think…Well I am obviously. But sometimes I’m not.’

The second series will follow the couple as Ann moves in with Anne in Shibden Hall – and embarked on their life as wife and wife.

Last week, Suranne was shown not to be taking any chances amid the coronavirus pandemic as she donned a face shield whenever she was not shooting.

An insider explained: ‘As soon as she finished the scene she reached for her visor. She is clearly taking no chances.

‘She had one of her staff ready to hand it to her as she walked off set. It was weird watching her put it on while still in 1830s costume. Some people on set are still obviously in a state of shock about the second lockdown. But she was very cheery.’

The source added that Suranne always has ‘a smile on her face’ while working on set, and tries to cheer the cast and crew up between takes.

They also claimed that the cast always keep their masks close to hand so that they were able to them on whenever the cameras were not rolling.
