‘That’s how you find out you are out of there’: Derryn Hinch exposes the secret telltale signs that a TV presenter is about to be axed

Australian media veteran Derryn Hinch, 76, has more than 50 years experience in the industry.

And now he has revealed the helpful clues any TV personality should look out for ahead of being axed.

Speaking of his own experience of being let go by Channel Seven in the 90s, Derryn told the Sacked Showbiz podcast of the telltale signs his sacking was imminent.

The 76-year-old radio host said it paid to be observant and on friendly terms with the makeup and wardrobe crew.

‘I discovered my new suits had not been ordered or weren’t arriving, so you find out you are out of there because your new suits didn’t arrive,’ he said.

‘I have learnt since then make-up ladies and wardrobe ladies know everything about television,’ Derryn added.

Derryn hosted his own current affairs show on Seven titled Hinch until 1991, and it  later moved to Network Ten for two more years.

Elsewhere on the podcast, the self-proclaimed ‘Human Headline’ said his axing was just one of 16 that had occurred over his five decade long career.

‘I have been sacked 16 times, you could say 17 if you considered being voted out of the Senate,’ he told the podcast.

Earlier this year, Derryn made headlines after Kerri-Anne Kennerley confronted the journalist for calling her a ‘cockroach’ in one of his books.

He was being interviewed via Skype on Studio 10 about his latest book, Unfinished Business – Life of a Senator, when Sarah Harris brought up his inflammatory comment.

Rather than shying away from the subject, Derryn reaffirmed his belief that Kerri-Anne, 67, was indeed the ‘cockroach of Australian television’.

‘It was a compliment! I was trying to say that she’s a survivor. We both hosted the Midday show,’ he said, referring to the their stint on Nine’s daytime program in 1994.

He added: ‘She’s a cockroach. If a nuclear war hit your television studio, you may go, Sarah, but I bet you Kerri-Anne will still be there.’
