Sunny Hostin and Sara Haines argue over Trump voters being ‘selfish’

The View co-hosts Sunny Hostin and Sara Haines shared a tense moment while arguing over whether or not Americans who voted for President Donald Trump were ‘selfish’ on Thursday.

The ladies had been discussing how Tuesday’s election was a referendum on the States with moderator Whoopi Goldberg and co-hosts Joy Behar and Ana Navarro during the Hot Topics segment.

‘For the past four years, this president has shown us that he is a misogynist, that he is homophobic, he is racist and that he mismanaged a coronavirus pandemic to the tune of over 250K American deaths,’ the 52-year-old Bronx native said.

‘Yet 50% of America saw all of that and looked the other way to their brothers and their sisters and said, “I’m gonna vote for him anyway.” That is really disheartening. For me, that means that you are selfish.’

Hostin continued: ‘I’m not gonna say that 50% of Americans are racist and sexist and homophobic, but I will say that tells me they will look the other way to that kind of behavior, to the plight of their fellow Americans, if personally they feel they are doing okay and they will do better under that type of president and that, I think, is despicable. It is un-American.’

The Iowa-born 43-year-old – who’s a self-described ‘slightly left leaning moderate’ – said she ‘disagreed with Sunny’ and said Democrats ‘can’t expect empathy if we don’t give it’ to Republicans.

‘People are raised in different places and they have different things at the top of their ballot they’re voting for,’ Haines said.

‘And I think when we start conversations with – which Sunny you clarified you’ve said, “I’m not calling them racist. I’m not calling them sexist. But you say they’re turning their cheek…

‘It’s not going to lead to a productive conversation. It’s going to keep people at opposite ends of the spectrum and the dining room table until we find a way to have a healthier conversation about these differences.’

Sunny shot back: ‘But this conversation must be honest. I’m not saying that it has to be filled with name-calling, but it cannot be filled with lies.’

The lawyer said the election showed us the true character of many Americans and that doesn’t mean half the country is ‘homophobic, sexist, or against transgender rights.’

‘But I will say, if you voted for Trump, you then did look the other way at the fact that he is not allowing our transgender brothers and sisters from serving in the military,’ Sunny continued.

‘That he has called people from African countries, that those people are from s***-hole countries, that he has slandered women, that he has done all of those terrible, terrible things.

‘And he has separated children from their families. If you voted for him, then all of those things are okay with you because of your own personal circumstance.’

Behar then chimed in: ‘A lot of people in this country need to have a come to Jesus moment and look in the mirror and see what they did. [Sunny] is right about a lot of it.’
