Model Bambi Northwood-Blyth raises awareness for Type 1 diabetes – after revealing she at first found her diagnosis ‘daunting’ and kept it secret

Bambi Northwood-Blyth discussed her Type 1 diabetes for the first time in 2018, explaining that she was diagnosed at 12, but kept it quiet for a time. 

These days, the model is very open about her illness, raising awareness in a new Instagram post. 

On Friday, the 29-year-old shared an image in which she was giving herself an injection at a cafe, likely before a meal.

She captioned it: ‘November is Diabetes Awareness Month. A big part of spreading awareness is educating others about what Type 1 diabetes is (and is not). 

‘Education is key to help spread the facts and advocate for our T1 community. Keep the questions coming below… what do you want to know??’ 

She then went on to answer a number of questions from her fans, including suggesting meal plans she enjoys.

The beauty wrote:  ‘Depending on levels and what’s in the meal, but imagine your plate is in threes, 1/3 grain, 1/3 veggies, 1/3 protein (tofu, fish, lentils)! And lemon, mustard, vinegar are always better than a sweet / heavy sauce’.   

Bambi, who is an ambassador for the organisation Beyond Type 1, revealed her battle with the condition in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar in September 2018.

‘I would have to have eight injections and take 10-12 blood tests a day,’ she said. ‘It’s taken me a long time to talk about my condition publicly.’  

She told her fans last year: ‘Diabetes has made me appreciate how much my body does for me, and what I would otherwise take for granted. 

‘I have had diabetes for my entire career as an international model, and it hasn’t once stopped me from walking runways, doing photo shoots, TV shows and campaigns.’
