Elly Miles hometown visit with Joe Woodbury got off to a good start on Thursday night on The Bachelorette.

Aside from the fact they both live in Newcastle, Elly, 23, was impressed when the strapping footballer brought his adorable dog Alfie along.

As scenes of Joe and Alfie playing in the park aired, Twitter erupted with talk the golden retriever was the most eligible bachelor on the show.

During the episode, Elly revealed she had previously met the cute canine.

‘Alfie was actually Joey’s little wingman the first time that I met Joe. And so to bring Alfie along today – smooth move,’ she said.

Joey said he brought Alfie along as they are always together, even referring to the lovable dog as his ‘son’.

‘So I thought it’d be nice for you and me to spend some time with my son.’

Despite the popularity of the puppy, The Bachelorette continues to flop in the ratings, hitting an all-time low last week.

On Wednesday, 487,000 metro viewers tuned in to watch sisters, with it only just beating low-rating, The Project.

Former Studio 10 executive producer Rob McKnight told The Daily Telegraph on Thursday that the ratings setback for The Bachelorette is something that would cause the network concern.

‘To me it’s a mixture of viewer fatigue with three Bachelor franchises back-to-back and just bad casting,’ he said.

‘While the idea of two sisters is an interesting take, these two young ladies just don’t have the appeal of others we’ve seen in the role,’ he said.
