Barrymore reacted: ‘How crazy is that? And you looked so cute. You looked like a hot androgynous fem dude from like a Fellini film.’

The Princess Diaries star said: ‘That is probably the best compliment I’m going to get all day, maybe all week because that is my dream and kind of what I always aspire to. My costume that year was Lost Angeles. I imagined that I was a starlet who had fallen on hard times and been run over.

‘And my hairdo in that was a wig that reminded me of a Seventeen Magazine shoot that you did when I was a teenager that I spent all summer trying to replicate but it was impossible because you have angel hair and mine is lovely but it is brown and straight.’

She also revealed what she and Adam had in mind for the family’s Halloween costumes this year.

Hathaway took to Instagram earlier this month to pay tribute to her predecessor: ‘Would you please take a moment to join me in celebrating Anjelica Huston’s flawless and iconic turn as The Grand High Witch?

‘Her performance is magnificent – witty, unforgettable, scary as hell and sheer perfection (the scene where she pushes the baby down the cliff still gives me chills to this day.) I just wanted to say, one AH to another, that I tip my wig to the O.G.G.H.W. Anjelica Huston. #WitchesAreReal #TheWitchesMovie’
