Chris Kamara was once forced to drink OUTSIDE a pub after being told ‘we don’t serve your kind’

Footballer Chris Kamara reveals he was once forced to drink OUTSIDE a pub after being told ‘we don’t serve your kind in here’… while his white teammates were allowed entry

Former footballer Chris Kamara has spoken about his experiences of racism and how he was forced to drink outside a pub because of the colour of his skin.

Chris, 62, was travelling with his Portsmouth teammates during his playing days in 1975 when the troubling incident occurred.

Appearing on Tuesday’s edition of Steph’s Packed Lunch on Channel 4, he recounted his experience in response to a feature by Alexandra Wilson QC about the need for more diversity within the legal system.

He said: ‘In 1975 when I was at Portsmouth and we played Sunderland, we went into a pub in Wetherby. We used to stop on the way home at The Wetherby Whaler for fish and chips.

‘We stopped there, the physio goes and gets the chips and we go over into the pub. This is the first time my teammates have experienced me getting racism: “we don’t we serve his kind in here”.

‘My teammates are going “you’re joking?” Some of them had already got their pints.

‘The skipper, Paul Went, ended up bringing me a pint outside and I stood outside… So that’s 1975 and we’re still talking in 2020 about this.’

A stunned Steph McGovern said: ‘You had to stand outside the pub?! It’s disgusting, I can’t believe it!

‘We’ve talked about this before Kammy, but every time you’ve got another story and there are so many examples where you’ve had racism. It’s disgusting.’

Chris responded: ‘It is disgusting and we’ve still got people talking about their experiences now. It shouldn’t be happening, it really shouldn’t be happening.’

Steph’s Packed Lunch airs weekdays at 12.30PM on Channel 4.
