A Scottish chip shop has unleashed the savoury sequel to the deep fried Mars Bar – a battered pickled onion.

Amandeep Singh, 38, from Glasgow, wanted to find the new battered craze in order to help his takeaway Codfather fast food in Cambuslang stand out from other cafes.

The father-of-four said he was looking for ‘something different’ when he decided to try deep-frying the pickled onions which he normally sells as a side.

Despite only having launched the new menu item this week, the Amandeep has revealed they have already proven to be a hit with customers, saying: ‘People have been messaging saying they’re really tasty.’

Amandeep has been running his takeaway restaurant for 16 years and said he has never seen anyone else selling deep-fried pickled onions.

The onions follow other items such as Mars Bars, Jaffa Cakes, Brussel sprouts and Quality Street sweets to be thrown into the fryer.

Speaking about the wacky snack, Amandeep said: ‘I’ve been working a long time in chippies and just wanted to be different and thought I’d try putting a pickled onion in batter.

‘When it’s quiet you think up different things.
