News of the World trailer showcases Tom Hanks as a gifted storyteller

Tom Hanks returns to the big screen alongside talented newcomer Helena Zengel in the first trailer for News of the World.

Hanks stars as Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd, who, five years after the Civil War has ended, travels from town to town telling news stories about what’s happening around the world in the trailer (via Universal Pictures YouTube).

He ends up agreeing to take young Johanna (Zengel) to her aunt and uncle, after being raised by the Kiowa tribe in Texas for the past six years.

The trailer begins with Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd getting ready for his latest show, armed with a number of newspapers, as visitors drop coins in his small cup.

‘My name is Jefferson Kyle Kidd and I’m here tonight to read to you the news from this great world of ours,’ Kidd begins.

He’s then seen riding in a covered wagon with a younger man, who marvels at his occupation.

‘So they pay you to tell stories? I ain’t never heard of that, as a thing a man could do,’ the young man says, as Kidd retorts, ‘Well, it’s not a rich man’s occupation, as you can see.’

Later Kidd is alone on horseback, when he comes across an overturned covered wagon with blood on the ground, as he hears something rustling in the woods.

He chases down the person and finds young Johanna, who he learns doesn’t understand English, and signals to hear that he’s her ‘friend.’

At night, he finds a letter that reveals, ‘Indians took you when they attacked your family six years prior.’

The letter also reveals that Johanna’s mother father and sister have passed, and he finds out she has family in Castroville, when he’s asked by a man why he’s doing this.

‘She needs to laugh and dream. She needs new memories,’ he says, as another shot shows a group trying to get them to go down another road.

Along the way he also tries to teach her English, though she turns away from him defiantly, while he admits he, ‘does not have a clue as to the care of a child.’

At night, Johanna is rifling through his belongings, when she comes across a picture of his wife, as he takes it back from her. 

As they continue their journey, Johanna moves from the cart to the horse, as she says the word ‘horse’ and ‘Captain’ in English.

They run into a group of men, who recognize the girl as a ‘captive out of Wichita Falls,’ as they ask how much he wants for her.   

He makes it clear that, ‘this girl is not for sale,’ as he gets into a physical altercation with the men.

The trailer continues with Kidd looking frantically for Johanna in the middle of a dust storm, with Johanna also seen raising a rifle to defend herself.

The trailer winds down with a number of random shots, as Kidd tells people gathered around him that, ‘these are are stories of men and women very much like you, waiting for better days to come.’

The trailer ends with dramatic shots of Kyle and Johanna outrunning a number of men, as he yells back, ‘You can’t have her! I’m taking her home!’

News of the World, which reunites Hanks with his Captain Phillips director Paul Greengrass, hits theaters nationwide on Christmas Day from Universal Pictures.
