Sunrise’s Sam Armytage gushes over interview with Matthew McConaughey

Channel 10’s Carrie Bickmore was left red-faced after Matthew McConaughey savagely shut down her line of questioning on The Project on Wednesday.

And in stark contrast, Samantha Armytage, 44, couldn’t contain her delight as she enjoyed an effortlessly smooth interview with the Hollywood star on Thursday’s edition of Sunrise.

‘My life is made. He’s so fantastic!’ the Channel Seven presenter gushed to her co-host David Koch after speaking to the American, 50, about his new tell-all memoir, Greenlights.

‘My life is made!’ Sunrise’s Samantha Armytage, 44, couldn’t contain her delight as she enjoyed an effortlessly smooth interview with Matthew McConaughey on Thursday – a day after the Hollywood star brutally shut down Channel 10’s Carrie Bickmore on The Project

In a pre-recorded video, Sam fangirled over the Magic Mike star as she grilled him over his iconic movie quote: ‘Alright, alright, alright’.

‘This is my bucket list moment… can you please say it for me?’ she eagerly asked.

Immediately, Matthew obeyed her orders as he recited the line – which he first made famous in the 1993 movie, Dazed and Confused.

Starstruck Sam also spoke to The Dallas Buyers Club actor about the year he spent in Australia as an exchange student.

‘It’s a wild coming-of-age story for me,’ he noted. ‘If I look back at my 50 years, if there’s one year that is most responsible for where I am today, it’s that year of exchange in Australia.’

Sam asked: ‘What was it about Australia that made it a pivotal point in your life?’

The Interstellar star replied: ‘I ended up living in this small little farm town which was away from everything. I didn’t have mum or dad, I didn’t have friends, and I didn’t have these things to rely on or seek support from.

‘I was forced to go inwards with me. That’s when I really started writing in earnest.

‘I became a half-a** vegetarian, eating a head of iceberg lettuce with ketchup on it every night. I was running six miles a day. I was celibate and convinced that my calling in life was to become a monk’.

Matthew’s candid and smooth interview with Samantha came after he brutally shut down a question on how he ‘feels about’ U.S president Donald Trump during an interview on Wednesday night’s The Project.

The hunk had appeared on the Channel 10 panel show to discuss his new memoir, Greenlights – but awkwardly refused to answer a question on politics when queried by host Carrie.

‘How do I feel about him?’ he said. ‘I want a fuller context and a longer form to talk about that.

‘If I said something to you now, one line could be taken out of context and could be put into a headline, so I don’t want to take the chance for that.

‘I need a longer form, where I know it’s word for word – everything I’m saying is being broadcast.’

She quickly wrapped up the interview, saying ‘Great to chat! It’s been fabulous. Thank you very much for your time.’

Matthew has rarely spoken out about his political views in the past.

But in an interview with BBC’s Andrew Marr in 2017, he was asked if ‘the cultural elite of America should give [Trump] a break.’

In response, Matthew said: ‘Well, they don’t have a choice now. He’s our president. And it’s very dynamic and as divisive of an inauguration and time we’ve ever had.

‘At the same time, it’s time for us to embrace and shake hands with this fact and be constructive with him over the next four years.’

His comments were in the aftermath of Trump’s election – and a year later, when he was asked to clarify his words, he gave a similar statement to The Daily Beast.

‘What I said, or thought I said, is that people were in denial and we have to accept the fact that he’s president,’ he said.

He said he would only express his views on camera in an unedited form, adding: ‘It’s just that I don’t want to become clickbait.’
