The former X Factor star, 29, discussed her decision to go teetotal and her fitness journey during a candid interview on Lorraine.

The singer said: ‘The difference is huge but you have to live through things to realise the thing isn’t the right thing for you. One day I woke up and said “I’m not doing this anymore. This can’t be my life”.’

‘In life you can get used to taking the edge off with a beer or a wine.

‘When you stop taking that edge off the feelings are really intense. You get used to that, that becomes life. And that’s something I’ve actually quite enjoyed.

‘The difference to my life, I want to share that, how my mental health has changed… I stopped drinking and all of a sudden so many things made more sense.

‘Fitness became a huge part of my life. I wanted to share that and I wanted it to be honest.’

Lucy, who has stunned social media followers with her three stone weight loss, said: ‘I was six months sober, I was in Vegas and all my friends were hungover.

‘Suddenly my body said “run” and I did 2.4miles. I said I’m never doing that again, then I did 10km next week and then I ended up doing several half marathons.

I remember last time I was on about not eating biscuits bread and beer, I eat all those things now in moderation. I do a lot of fitness but I eat a lot of Biscoff.’

Lucy split from her wife Georgina in November 2019, after six years together and fostering 12 children while they underwent fertility treatment.

Discussing the struggles she had faced in her life, Lucy said: ‘I was married, that didn’t work out. I feel like there are a lot of things in the past that I’ve done and the way I’ve acted in the past has messed up so much for me.

‘Without drinking I’ve been able to work internally on those flaws I had. Confronted some things I’ve never confronted before.

‘I’m writing a book that talks quite openly about the things I’ve been through. My experience on The X Factor, being open about the reason why I left and things like that.

‘That’s actually been quite cathartic, as well as being sober and doing the fitness.’

Speaking about fostering children, she said, ‘I used to do that with my ex-wife. It’s a brilliant thing to do and it’s very, very hard… as a person that lives alone, I’m not sure I could do it with the touring I do, but when I’m older absolutely.

‘I’d quite like to adopt an older child when I’m a bit older, too.’

Lucy competed on The X Factor in 2012, but eventually quit after falling ill and not wanting to unfairly go through each round without competing, leading the way for James Arthur to win.
