The former First Lady of France Carla Bruni has revealed that the secret to her happy marriage is ‘luck’, insisting that romance is still well and truly alive after 12 years of marriage.

‘Everything is romantic [with Nicolas],’ she said, ‘First of all we met on a Tuesday and he asked me for marriage on a Thursday and he asked my mother, which made me feel like I was a young bride’.

Italian-born Carla met Nicolas, who has three other children from previous relationships, at a dinner party in 2007, said it was ‘lucky’ she met her husband later in life.

When asked what the secret to her happy marriage is, she said: ‘I guess it’s luck, we were lucky because we had a daughter together, we had four children before we got married.

‘We had a daughter quite late, at the age of being grandparents, and so I think it’s just luck we got married later.’

Carla spent lockdown with her husband and Italian family in their Parisian home, and admitted that her extended family could at times be too much for her husband.

‘There were 14 of us,’ she said. ‘Everyone is Italian and he was reading the paper at times just to get away from us, from all the talk.’

Carla is releasing her sixth self titled album this month, and revealed that the majority of the love songs on the record are about her husband.

‘Most of the love songs are about him,’ said Carla. ‘You start from a very intimate point of view, when you’re writing a song you start with your own stories but it goes to everyone’s stories’.

Speaking of her love songs she went on to joke: ‘I’m a drama queen because I’m Italian, but I’m trying to be very French!

‘When you’re writing a song you have to make it as a drama or there would be nothing to write.’

The former supermodel went on to admit that she doesn’t believe in dieting, and commits to exercise so she can eat and drink ‘as much as she wants’.

‘I don’t know about beauty secrets,’ said Carla, ‘But I try to have a life that mixes being happy, drinking and eating as much as I want. So the only thing I really do is exercise so I don’t have to be on a diet.’

Bruni was a model in the 1980s and 1990s before turning to singing prior to her marriage to Sarkozy. Much has been said of her colourful dating history.

She is said to have had an on/off affair with Mick Jagger when she was in her 20s, which, according to his wife Jerry Hall, precipitated their divorce.

She also briefly dated musician Eric Clapton in 1990. In 2000, she entertained a passionate love affair with French philosopher Raphaël Enthoven, who was married at the time and left his wife for Bruni after five years of marriage.

The couple dated for seven years and share a son together. Enthoven inspired one of Bruni’s best-known songs ‘Raphaël,’ in which she describes him as a ‘devil of love.’

In a rather vaudevillian twist, Bruni dated Enthoven’s father Jean-Paul before becoming the writer’s lover.
