Demi Lovato releases politically tinged anthem Commander In Chief taking aim at Trump

After a rough patch in her personal life, she’s focusing on political activism through her music.

Demi Lovato surprise-dropped a new song on Tuesday night, titled Commander In Chief, which is an unapologetic call-out of US president Donald Trump.

The 28-year-old singer’s new ballad is timed just weeks ahead of the presidential election, and in a year that has seen a persistent pandemic as well as ongoing unrest over systemic racism – two issues that Trump has repeatedly been dismissive about.

Lovato announced the release of Commander In Chief with a stark black-and-white selfie on her Instagram, in which she wore a face mask with the word VOTE.

In the caption, she included some of the track’s lyrics, while also taking the opportunity to make a call to action to her fans and followers to go out and vote.

‘Won’t give up, stand our ground… We’ll be in the streets while you’re #CommanderInChief. Video dropping tomorrow,’ she wrote.

‘I’m calling on all of you, please join me in voting for this years election. Find your voter information at iwillvote.com’ Demi concluded.

Lovato is slated to perform the ballad at the Billboard Music Awards, which will air live on Wednesday night on NBC.

Soon after, she will also release the music video, which she’s already teased on her Instagram Stories – it looks to be a collection of diverse actors lip synching the powerful lyrics.

Seemingly a song written directly to Trump, passages in the verses include:

‘We were taught when we were young, If we fight for what’s right there won’t be justice for just some. We won’t give up, stand our ground. We’ll be in the streets while you’re bunkering down. Loud and proud, best believe, We’ll still take a knee, while you’re Commander in Chief.’

Demi sings other lyrics as well:

‘Honestly, if I did the things you do, I couldn’t sleep’

The song was co-written by Lovato along with Billie Eilish’s brother Finneas, among others.

Commander In Chief comes almost two weeks after another song from Demi, titled Still Have Me, which seems to be a breakup track after her failed romance with ex-fiance Max Ehrich.

The pair enjoyed a whirlwind and very public love affair this year, which led to them isolating together amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The dalliance, however, came to an abrupt stop at the end of the summer, when The Cool For The Summer songstress ended her two-month engagement to her Young and The Restless beau, 29, in the middle of September.

‘It was very hurtful to Demi when she realized that Max’s intentions weren’t genuine,’ a source told PEOPLE magazine. ‘Breaking off the engagement was not an easy decision.

‘It was hard for Demi to admit she made a mistake when it came to Max.’

The couple were reportedly ‘having conflicts’ nearly two months after he proposed, and only six short months into their relationship.

‘Demi and Max were basically together 24/7 for months,’ an insider told PEOPLE after the couple quarantined together during the onset of the global pandemic. ‘They lived in a bubble with zero stress and everything was just fun.’

When Max headed to Atlanta, Georgia to film a new movie titled Southern Gospel, distance also took a toll on their relationship.

‘Max shot up in fame, and it’s been hard,’ the source said. ‘He got wrapped up in [Hollywood].’

An insider told US that Max was ‘blindsided by his fiancee’ and he’s still trying to figure out exactly what happened.

‘Max just went through a major breakup, he is heartbroken,’ a source said. ‘He’s not responding to friends again and he is in a fragile state. The posts he is making are not painting a picture of who Max really is.’

Since their separation, Ehrich has shared several heartbroken posts on his social media, and is allegedly attempting to still contact Lovato through her friends and family.
