They won the hearts of the nation when they fell for each other on the second series of Love Island before being crowned champions.

Yet Cara De La Hoyde cheekily admitted she wishes she had waited to appear on a later series, after seeing the deals and endorsements Islanders who featured on series three and four of the show have bagged.

The reality star, 30, joked that she would have a ‘bigger house, better car and better looking geezer’ if she had held fire and applied for another series, during an appearance on Love Island: What Happened Next on Tuesday.

Love Island has proved popular since it’s reboot in 2015, however it took off during its third series in 2017 with contestants receiving overnight fame following their stint in the Majorcan villa.

Cara and her husband Nathan Massey, 31, appeared on the programme to discuss their journey since leaving the dating show together as winners five years ago.

The couple, who tied the knot last summer, discovered they were expecting their first child, Freddie, together nine months after winning the show and decided to go their separate ways shortly after.

Nathan blamed their brief split on himself, as he revealed he got caught up on the wild party lifestyle after coming out of the villa and admitted he should have taken more time to cultivate his relationship with Cara.

He said: ‘We split up nine months in, I take responsibility, I got caught into the whirlwind of being a party boy.’

While Cara mused: ‘We split up just after I find out I was pregnant. We went to all the scans together and we spent a lot of time together. Splitting up is the best thing that could have happened to us.’

Nathan took Cara back to the villa where they first met in order to propose to her, as he admitted it was a costly experience in order to make the moment special.

He said: ‘It cost me an arm and a leg, but you’re only going to do it once hopefully!’

While filming the show, Cara was heavily pregnant with the couple’s second child – Delilah – as he joked her daughters arrival was imminent and said: ‘[She] might come today, might get a bit more than you bargained for!’

The couple later introduced their baby girl following the birth: ‘Since we last saw you we’ve had a new arrival, this is Delilah, she’s five weeks old.’

They settled down to watch themselves in the second series and Cara admitted she had never watched it back before.

She said: ‘This is Delilah’s first trip into London. She is going to watch mummy and daddy on the tele. I’ve never watched it!’

Love Island: What Happened Next continues on ITV2 at 9pm on Wednesday.
