Lidl has been revealed as the UK’s cheapest supermarket for everyday groceries since the start of the pandemic, according to new research.
The German discount chain was the best option for customers on a budget and undercut its nearest supermarket rival Asda by 10.5 per cent following a comparison of some of Britain’s biggest food retailers.
The study by trade magazine The Grocer compared a shopping basket of 33 typical grocery items, such as skimmed milk, flat mushrooms and Braeburn apples, at the six chains – Lidl, Asda, Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose.
It found Lidl was the cheapest among all the chains with a checkout bill of £37.59 while Waitrose was the most expensive with a bill of £55.75

The supermarket, which was 34.9per cent cheaper than Waitrose, undercut runner-up Asda’s price of £41.99 by £4.40.
Its 10.5 per cent winning margin was narrower than the 12.9 per cent it achieved in its previous guest slot in January, but marked an improvement on a year ago, when it came in 8.1 per cent cheaper than Asda.
Following the results The Grocer said: ‘Guest retailer Lidl claimed a convincing pricing win as it returned to The Grocer 33 for the first time since the start of the pandemic.
‘Lidl’s win demonstrates the scale of the challenge facing Asda and its prospective new owners, the Issa brothers and TDR, if they are to pursue its current strategy of repositioning the supermarket as a discounter.
‘This week Lidl offered the lowest price for 27 products with 18 exclusively cheapest.
‘Asda, meanwhile, failed to register any exclusively cheapest products and only matched the lowest price on six lines.
‘Tesco took third spot at £44.65. This was £7.06 more expensive than Lidl, making the discounter 15.8per cent cheaper.
‘At £55.75, Waitrose came in over £20 more expensive than Lidl and it meant the discounter was 34.9 per cent cheaper than the upmarket supermarket.’
The results comes after Lidl announced it was planning on opening 25 new stores in the UK by the end of the year, creating 1,000 more jobs.
The proposals will also see the retailer invest £1.3billion in the UK for 2021 and 2022 – seeing another 100 stores created across Britain and 4,000 new jobs.
In total, Lidl intends to open 1,000 new UK branches by the end of 2023, boosting job hopes amid the uncertainty created by the coronavirus pandemic.
Some of the 25 stores will open in Selhurst, Harrow Weald, Coleford and Llandudno Junction.
