After proposing to his girlfriend and announcing they’re expecting their first child within a matter of weeks, Patrick Mahomes revealed he’s taking new precautions with fiancee Brittany Matthews.

The 25-year-old Kansas City Chiefs quarterback popped the question to his high school sweetheart on September 1st, after receiving his Super Bowl ring, and they announced later in September that they were expecting their first child.

However, the quarterback revealed on Wednesday that he’s sleeping in a separate room than his pregnant fiancee, after his backup quarterback Jordan Ta’amu tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday.

The quarterback was part of a Chiefs press conference on Wednesday, when he was asked about how he’s treating this at home after his backup tested positive.

‘It’s something I think about every day,’ Mahomes said. ‘You have to think about that with her being pregnant and kind of that high-risk category.’

He added that he stayed six feet apart from Ta’amu, adding their ‘meeting room is set up so we’re far enough apart.’

‘When I went home over the weekend, I slept in a different bedroom and stayed away from her as much as possible,’ Mahomes added of his pregnant fiancee.

‘I’ve kind of gotten these negative tests back, so I’m just trying to do my part to kind of keep myself away from her,’ he stated.

He added that he gets tested, ‘every single day’ adding it’s good for, ‘keeping track of where I’m at.’

When asked what his ‘level of concern’ is for contracting the virus, he added that it was a risk everyone knew about coming into the season.

‘If you thought you would go through the entire season and no one was going to test positive, you have a little bit of false hope,’ he added.

He said that he did ‘whatever he can’ to be socially distant from Brittany and ‘keep my family safe.’

When asked about the Patriots’ Stephen Gilmore, who Mahomes was seen in close contact with after the game testing positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday, Mahomes stated, ‘I just think you have to trust in the process and the protocols that are set in place.’

He added that it was, ‘a little bit of a mental lapse’ to get up close with Gilmore,’ but he was still trusting the protocols in place to keep him safe.

Mahomes is coming off a season where he lead his Kansas City Chiefs to a Super Bowl win, where he was named the Super Bowl MVP in February.
